Soon it will be time to hang up the pulling harness. Some of the teams will be turned out for the season; others will begin their second profession – pulling sleighs. Whichever the teams do, we thank them and the people that work with them, for the enjoyment they have provided us with in this, 2011 pulling season.
I have figured out (roughly) the total kilometers the teams and their human partners traveled this year. Regina was used as the starting point; for some the pull was close to home, for others it was a distance to travel. The next week it might be the reverse. The teams (being horse & human) traveled a total of 4218 Km. Which is almost the equivalent of driving from Regina to Miami Beach Fl, which is is 4050 km. In a number I can relate to, being of “old school”, they traveled 2621 miles. That’s a lot of miles to be standing in a can on wheels. On long distance hauls, frequent stops are made and the teams unloaded and given a chance to get their “ground legs back”. Also gives the teamsters a chance to joke and heckle with each other! We almost qualify to sing the Hank Snow song “I’ve been everywhere”—Tisdale, Vibank, Weyburn, Ogema, Nokomis, Calgary, Swan River, Findlater, Yorkton, Edmonton and Regina. Call and book the Club for a pull at your community event in 2012 and help us expand our repertoire.
As the 2011 season comes to an end, and new and promising 2012 pulling season shines in the future, I leave you with a message from the club’s president, Norman Vertefeuille.
“Another summer has gone by for the Qu’Appelle Valley Club, the last competitions, Yorkton, Edmonton & Agribition, will complete the pulling season for the year. 2011 pulling season will be history.
The early pulls were wet, with some being cancelled The Club managed to still have fun, safe and competitive pulls for the remainder of the season. I would like to thank all the Pullers and Helpers that made a big effort to make sure we had enough teams to put on a good show for the spectators. A big thank you to all the Sponsors. Without you a competitive pull wouldn’t be possible.
I would also like to thank Wilma Olmsted for the photos, and the write-up she submits to Show Trail on behalf of the Club. Also to the QVHPC’s Webmaster, Stephanie Snell. Thank you Wilma & Stephanie. We look forward to seeing you in 2012.”
